the sequel game; or, HOW do they do it

Listen, anyone can and should write anything they want. That said, I think some writers are naturally inclined towards writing self-contained stories (and thus tend to be better at writing them), and some people are naturally inclined towards writing long arcs/series. And frankly, I don’t know how those people do it. They are powerful.

That’s not to say that I, as someone who feels better at writing self-contained stories, can never write a sequel, or vice-versa. It’s not a matter of quality so much as just being able to figure out how to spin an idea into something that spans multiple books/stories, OR how to compress an idea into one book/whatever. But I’ll be darned if I can do that! My brain is inclined to wrap things up in one go.

I absolutely do not have a point to this. It’s just food for thought, I guess. And that’s not even getting into writers who seem capable of working on one idea forever and ever, spinning it out into an endless tapestry. Those people are outliers and should not be counted. They are mighty.

About Me

Just an author with dreams of grandeur and a lot of hubris to spare. Occasionally, I’ll share news and talk about what’s on my mind. It’s almost like that’s what blogs are for.
